Creating an Outdoor Oasis

The garden--the fortress of solitude from the ever-maddening world. It should be a safe space of beauty and an area of tranquillity. But as anybody who has dabbled in a bit of garden DIY can confess, transforming the garden to an outdoor oasis can seem like hard work with hours that turn into days of heavy lifting, bending, and the occasional bit of blood, sweat, and tears. But it doesn’t have to be hard work. With these few tips, creating your outdoor oasis will be more straightforward than ever.

The Room with No Walls

It doesn’t matter as to whether you are working with a 10x10 square foot space or a 100x100 square foot space, the rules of outdoor areas remain relatively the same--just the amount and size of the furniture will differ obviously. You’ll want to make your oasis-to-be feel like an extension to your house. A room with no walls if you will. You can do this by keeping similar colour palettes and furniture styles. You shouldn’t forget the accessories, either. Items like throw pillows and rugs can help finish a room, even if that room happens to be outside of the home.

Be a Little Shady

Nobody, not even the most avid sun soaker, wants to be doused with the sunlight all day, especially the midday sun in the depths of the summer. Over the past few years, gardens with a shady spot have become incredibly stylish. Take respite under the cozy shelter of an outdoor umbrella, awning, or build a beautiful sheltered space like a pagoda out of wood lattice and hang a hammock or hanging egg chair in there and while away the hours with a good book and a refreshing drink.

Lighten Up

If you’re entertaining or having a backyard barbeque, you’ll want to have adequate light even when the sun gives way to the horizon. String Edison lights or lanterns create a romantic and intimate ambience while still providing ample light for all to see. If you’re fully renovating your outdoor space, you should also consider built-in strip lighting behind and inside of your planters. Strip lighting is easy to install while adding an air of sophistication to your outdoor oasis.

Remember the Weather

Even with our summer heat, we don’t go without a little bit of rain. And let’s face facts, you’re probably going to forget to bring the cushions in when the weather starts to turn south. And there are fewer worse things than schlepping sopping wet outdoor sofa cushions around in hopes that they dry in time for the next sunny day. Consider furniture that is easy to move around and is durable so that if you do get caught in a sudden downpour, you don’t have to fret about your furniture.

Finally, with your new found love of your garden, you’ll want to extend the use of your garden. You can do this very simply by adding an outdoor fireplace. The added bit of warmth can help make all the difference on a chilly autumn evening while providing the perfect excuse to snuggle up with your loved ones or indulge in some s’mores.
