DIY Floral Ice Cubes

With summer just around the corner, we know that many of you are already planning your backyard BBQs, bridal showers, and birthday parties. And if the saying in true, then those April showers are to thank for the May flowers that brighten our gardens and bring colour to our centrepieces. Why not take full advantage of the beautiful blossoms by incorporating them into your cocktails as well! Try out these simple DIY floral ice cubes!

How to make floral ice cubes:

Step 1: Use a large ice cube tray. Silicone trays work best as it is easier to remove the frozen cubes without breaking them.

Step 2: Boil distilled water and then cool to room temperature. Using this method will remove any impurities from the water and give you clear cubes! Repeat this process if you notice the water is still foggy after one boil.

Step 3: Fill each section of the tray ¼ will the room temperature water. Then, place flowers face in the water. Set in freezer until completely solid.

Step 4: Remove tray from freezer and add fill sections halfway full with water. Freeze again. Repeat until the tray is full. Freezing in layers will give the look of the flowers being suspended in the cubes.

Step 5: Use cubes within 24 hours or the flowers will start to lose their colouring. Add cubes to any cocktail, but keep in mind that as the ice cubes melt, they will give off notes of floral so we recommend adding them to cocktails that complement the flavour of the flowers. See the chart below for flowers that are edible.
