With a new season upon us and the weather starting to warm, it’s a sign to bust open your windows (and bring out your cleaning supplies!) Whether you love it or hate it, there's no denying that a deep spring clean is a great way to head into a new season.
Trust us, we get it. Cleaning your home isn’t very glamorous or fun, but with these five tips, spring cleaning won’t be something to dread. You might even enjoy it! A lofty statement, we know, but these tips could change your whole attitude about spring cleaning.
Make a schedule
Scope out your home: What areas need the most work? What do you typically avoid during a routine cleaning? These are the best places to start! We suggest tackling the dreaded areas first: the inside of your oven, window sills, blinds, etc. Regardless of where you start, having a plan and checklist will keep you focused. The key to your spring cleaning success is organization.
Work from top to bottom
When you’re ready to get going, it’s important to start from the ceiling down. This will force debris downward and keep you from having to re-dust or touch up your space. Tip: don’t forget those ceiling and fans, you’d be surprised with the dust bunnies that can collect up there!
Organize and throw out first, buy second. Before you go crazy at the store buying a ton of storage pieces and supplies, sort through your home first. We recommend going through each room and getting rid of anything you haven’t touched in 6 months or more. Then, you can easily determine if you need to buy any additional storage containers. Don’t set aside a whole day to declutter, either! It's much easier to space it out over a couple days.
Don’t forget your walls and windows
Most people almost always think to clean their floors, but we often forget about our walls and windows. Most dust settles on the floor and other surfaces, but you’d be surprised at how much is hidden on your walls. We recommend using a damp towel to wipe down walls and blinds, starting from the top and working your way down. Don’t forget about the outside of your windows, either! Take off your window screens and give them some TLC as well.
Tackle your carpets and upholstery
Fabrics absorb a lot of dirt and germs (gross but true!) Kick your spring cleaning up a notch and give your carpets and upholstery a good deep cleaning as well. Rent a carpet cleaner and before you use it, try practising on an unobtrusive area to ensure you know the machine well and that it won't ruin anything. Once you’re done, open your windows to speed up the drying process.
