David Metcalf – Regional Manager of In-Home Design
David originally came to La-Z-Boy with over 10 years of experience in residential, commercial and retail design throughout Canada, the US and Mexico. He received his education from the International Academy of Merchandising and Design in Toronto and his passion has always been in residential design, as he values the relationships he is able to build with loyal clients year after year.
He got his La-Z-Boy start at a different franchise location in 2002, where he worked to develop the In-Home Design program for 3 years. In 2005, he joined this La-Z-Boy team as a designer in both the Vaughan and Scarborough locations, eventually taking on the role of Regional Manager of In-Home Design in 2012. In addition to managing the In-Home Design division, David has developed a grass roots program and corporate sales initiative, as well as orchestrating participation in both local and regional Home Shows.
David’s approach to design is this - ”keep it simple and keep it classic.” What he prides himself most on, is his ability to listen to his clients, assess their needs and provide them with looks that have a great casual elegance.
Sue Bedford – In-Home Designer, London
For Sue, it all started at a very young age, when she began rearranging her parents’ furniture. She received her education in Visual Arts from Western University and after that, went on to pursue a diploma in Interior Decorating after spending some time working in Europe, inspired by the beautiful interiors and architecture.
She came to La-Z-Boy with a wealth of experience in various different fields. Sue’s extensive 20-year background includes working internationally in commercial interiors, with furniture and in the fashion merchandising industry. She started with La-Z-Boy in 2007 and hasn’t looked back.
Sue’s approach to design involves listening to her clients in order to create trusting relationships with them. This allows her to interpret their needs and turn it into a captivating vision, creating a home environment that truly feels right to the client on many levels, whether it’s coming home after a long day at the office, or hosting a cocktail party with friends.
Sharon Bagot – In-Home Designer, Vaughan
Sharon began her design career after she graduated from Sheridan College with a degree in Graphic Design, but she soon realized her true passion was for interiors, and acquired her Interior Design degree from the New York Institute of Art & Design.
She came to La-Z-Boy with over 20 years of design experience working and designing furniture for various design firms and retailers in residential, corporate and model home design. Sharon also has experience in teaching design courses at Georgian College and taking on various speaking engagements at home shows, for paint and room planning.
Sharon is an award-winning La-Z-Boy designer, working with the franchise for over 6 years. She is well known for her creative passion and energy when working with clients, allowing her to establish great relationships and trust. Her aesthetic is ‘timeless, but eye-catching,’ which creates a distinctive and welcoming space that will reflect the clients’ personalities and lifestyle. She prides herself on being able to take your vision and help you create the perfect space.
Laura Goodreid – In-Home Designer, Scarborough
Laura received her education from Ryerson’s School of Interior Design, with a Bachelor of Applied Arts in Interior Design. As a seasoned design professional, she brought over 15 years of experience in residential design planning with various retailers and firms, when she joined the La-Z-Boy team in 2013.
With Laura’s depth of experience, and as an award-winning La-Z-Boy designer, she is dedicated to ensuring that her clients’ needs are fully addressed, while creating a beautiful living environment for them to enjoy for years to come. Her design philosophy is simple and client-focused. Laura makes a point of understanding the clients’ needs and objections, and then formulates a design plan based on this assessment, allowing each proposal to be personalized and unique.
On a more personal level, Laura is a visual artist and a skilled wood-worker. Following her creative passion, she has promoted and sold her furniture, home accessories and artwork at various galleries and craft shows in the GTA.
Sue Wallace – In-Home Designer, Markham
Sue joined the La-Z-Boy Furniture team as a selling manager in 2005, where she remained for 4 years. With a business degree from Ryerson and an Interior Design Certificate from Seneca, the In-Home design program became the perfect fit for her. It was then that she shifted her role over and has been a permanent member of the design team for over 7 years.
Sue came to La-Z-Boy with an extensive background in both real estate as well as furniture sales and design at various retailers in the GTA. This gives her a unique perspective of how closely related these two fields are, as witnessed by the ever-growing base of home renovation television shows. She has been involved in, and managed, the numerous renovations on her investment properties and even designed her own home!
She gathers much of her inspiration from architecture and gravitates towards simple, clean lines that will stand the test of time for her clients. Sue tries to achieve a timeless look for many of her customers, utilizing neutral fabrics and finishes for more permanent or larger design elements, and adding pops of colour with smaller accent pieces and accessories.
Kathryn Hilder – In-Home Designer, Burlington
Kathryn, a passionate designer intent on developing the clear expression of each of her clients’ personal styles, brought over 25 years of professional design experience when she joined the La-Z-Boy In-Home team in 2013. Over the course of her career she has worked in residential interior design, home staging, furniture design and construction, fine art, as well as project management. This depth of knowledge propelled her into eventually teaching classes in colour theory, design, and countless others, at the Humber Institute of Technology and Advanced Learning for 13 years.
Kathryn received her education at the University of Manitoba, with degrees in both Interior Design and Fine Arts. This has enabled her to be proficient in any design style that a client may come to her with, as she is a creative and resourceful problem solver who aims to unite the clients’ needs, wants and desires.
She attributes much of her inspiration to her deep knowledge base that is rooted in the history of art and design, and how that impacts interiors. Kathryn works off the belief that it is possible to create personal spaces that will provide a sense of comfort and beautiful for any individual, and is a goal that can be universally attained, one room at a time.
David Hendricks – In-Home Designer, Burlington
David brings over 25 years of interior design experience to the La-Z-Boy Furniture Galleries team. Originally from England, David knew he wanted to pursue a career in architecture and design and became an Architectural Technologist. Eventually realizing his passion was in interior design he free-lanced as an upholsterer and received his Interior Design degree from Ryerson University. This experience as an upholsterer truly fostered his love for soft furnishings, fabrics and case goods. David’s breadth of experience expands into design and project management for several builders and design firms, as well as designing model homes, sales and presentation exteriors and interiors, custom millwork and kitchens.
As an In-Home designer with La-Z-Boy since 2016, David brings widespread experience from several different aspects of the design journey. He truly loves working with furniture and space planning, to find the perfect and unique fit for each one of his clients. For him, developing the client relationship is the most important part, so that he can address their needs and effectively create their dream living space.
Karin Stoesser – In-Home Designer, Oakville
Karin’s career began in the graphic design industry before the interior side of things caught her eye and she realized, through personal renovating and decorating experience, that she wanted to help people design their perfect space. Freshly armed with a certification in Home Staging and diploma in Interior Decorating, she joined the La-Z-Boy team as a visual merchandiser, where she honed in on her ability to accessorize store vignettes and create beautiful displays with artwork and mirrors.
With a solid foundation, Karin transitioned to the In-Home Design team in 2011 and quickly became one of La-Z-Boy’s top Canadian designers year after year and was ranked the number one La-Z-Boy In-Home Designer, in Canada, in 2014.
Her approach to design is to take a few calculated risks, by combining different styles and finishes to produce a well-orchestrated and comfortable atmosphere, all according to the clients’ needs and design preferences. She loves the elegance of reflective materials, the feel of great leather and the incorporation of organic materials. To her, the most important aspect of design is the client, and believes that your home should work to enhance the way you live, while looking beautiful at the same time.
Pam Fleming – In-Home Designer, Etobicoke
Pam, a highly enthusiastic and one of La-Z-Boy’s most seasoned and successful designers, joined the team over 12 years ago. Her design career began at Niagara College, where she received her degree in Interior Design. She laid the groundwork for her ever-growing design sense with a junior role at a full-service interior design firm, working on full-scale renovations, designing architectural features and furnishing rooms for clients.
Pam brings a wealth of knowledge to the In-Home program, not only because of her tenure with La-Z-Boy, but also through her extensive experience with designing and selling custom drapery. This knowledge fostered her love for the use of colours, varying textures and high quality fabrics. She spent 10 very successful years in the drapery business, before returning to her love of furniture – leading her straight to La-Z-Boy.
She takes much of her inspiration from ever-evolving upholstery, tables, fabrics, area rugs and accessories, and sees how they will work within her clients’ wish lists, bringing together solutions for their spaces. Pam loves working with her sales team to create looks that her clients dream about living with.
Melissa Vandenberg – In-Home Designer, Kitchener
Brand new to La-Z-Boy, but certainly not to the industry, Melissa joined the La-Z-Boy team in 2015, bringing over 20 years of experience in retail sales and interior design along with her. She is a graduate of the Interior Design program at Niagara College of Applied Arts & Technology and it was there that she developed her keen sense of colour, unique style and passion for creating beautiful spaces.
Melissa has spent her career working for retailers on the custom upholstery side of the business, driving sales through their design programs. With this extensive experience not only in design, but also in fostering client relationships, she is sure to deliver the clients’ vision, exactly how they imagined it. She truly enjoys helping them achieve the best design solutions to fit their home and lifestyle, while paying close attention to colour, fabrics and finishes, as well as the character of the home, to get the most visually-appealing final product.
Susan Keizerwaard – In-Home Designer, Newmarket
Susan received her education in Interior Decorating and Design from Seneca College and has been with La-Z-Boy for over 6 years. Her career here began as a Visual Merchandiser, where she came into her own and truly developed her fun-loving and unique design style.
Susan has a wealth of experience in the retail furniture sales industry, as she was a storeowner, accessory buyer and merchandiser for over 30 years, prior to joining the La-Z-Boy team. Her knowledge of custom window treatments and custom upholstery enables her to give her clients that ‘something extra’ when advising on creating a beautiful space for them.
Her personal approach to design is always influenced by the clients’ lifestyle. She gets to know their needs and how they want to live in the space she’s designing, first, before suggesting upholstery, fabric and colour choices or layout. Because of this, Susan gives each client a one-of-a-kind experience and ensures her personalized touch every time.
